BitTorrent launches $2 app for photo-sharing across iOS, Android, Windows Phone

BitTorrent Shoot lets you share photos and videos between iOS, Android, and Windows Phone platform.

New Delhi: Peer-to-peer file sharing service BitTorrent has launched a new paid app that makes sharing content across platforms seamless.

Dubbed BitTorrent Shoot, the $2 photo and video sharing app lets you share content between iOS, Android, and Windows Phone platform.

A report on VentureBeat notes that BitTorrent Shoot lets you make first three sends free of cost and later prompts you to pay $1.99 after the transfers are complete. However, the recipient is never charged for downloading the content.

The app uses the same underlying syncing engine as BitTorrent Sync that lets you share content directly between devices without uploading to, and downloading from, the cloud. However, BitTorrent Shoot is restricted to only sharing photos and videos between mobile devices and requires the receiving device to scan the file-sharing QR code from the sender's device.

One of the biggest advantages of this app is its cross-platform support. The app also assures users of content privacy as the files move directly between devices without going through the cloud, and hence, being less hackable.

With the Sync technology in place, bulk sharing or sharing of heavy files is not a problem. File sharers need not be on the same network or restrict themselves to only a set number of files. BitTorrent explains that users can send files to multiple devices at the same time.

In a time when sharing photos or videos across platforms is not as difficult a task as it used to be earlier, thanks to free services like Facebook Messenger or even good old emails, a paid app might not go down well with the consumers. Also, this is the first time that BitTorrent has introduced a paid mobile app without a free tier. However, the company defends its paid model for the new app, saying that the app will never feature ads and there is value to the app as it is offering better privacy and data protection than counterpart apps.
