Let us just start by saying that the phone under review here may not be anything that you have come across till date. Agreed that the iPhones and Samsungs dominate the smartphone industry. The Tom and Jerry tussle between the two is never-ending and while the two decide who is better, there is always a ‘Butch’ in the picture.
Except, the ‘Butch’ in this picture is a ‘CAT’. CAT S60, as it is called, fulfils all the bereft tangents that all the best smartphones available today miss out on, while still managing to keep up with a regular Android users expectations. A little background check – CAT S60 has been designed by Caterpillar Inc., a company known for manufacturing equipment for construction, mining and like. CAT S60 comes as the latest phone in the Cat phones line-up.
So just how does this smartphone fare for an average Indian user? Let’s find out.CAT S60 Back Panel. (Image: News18.com/ Sarthak Dogra)
People tend to wonder where they can get such a rugged and hard mobile case. At that point, you realise that the CAT S60 is nothing like ordinary and it is not that person’s fault to have mistaken it for a sophisticated battle gear (or an uber-cool mobile case).
The CAT S60 is robust, heavy and a good half a centimetre thicker than your average smartphones. Topping all this, the phone is surprisingly appealing to look at, so much so that you would get tired of showing/ explaining it to others. While you hand over your phone to let them ‘test it out’, there is a mental peace about the phone not being dropped and shattered to pieces.
This is because of the utmost durability that the CAT S60 comes with. Let’s not forget, the smartphone is built to military grade specifications and delivers exactly the experience you would expect from a military device.
On the inside, Cat S60 houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Octa-core processor and runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0. The 3GB RAM makes the smartphone function smoothly and gets you through your regular day of work without any lag.
CAT S60 comes with a 4.7-inch screen in a Corning Gorilla Glass 4. On the memory front, it includes a 32GB internal storage which is expandable up to 256GB using an external memory card.CAT S60 SIM Slot. (Image: News18.com/ Sarthak Dogra)
It is powered by a 3800 mAh battery that easily lasts through 2 days of usage, given the less power consumption by the decently sized screen and charges around 10 percent within 15 minutes.
Now that we have established that the CAT S60 can take up the responsibility of any regular Android smartphone, we can focus on its core competencies. The CAT S60 is the most waterproof smartphone, up to 1 hour in 5m depth, as claimed by the company.
As we tested if it can ‘walk the talk’, the phone indeed took a generous dip in the water for about half an hour and emerged out working perfectly. There are two toggle switches at the front to switch between water submersible levels of up to 2m to 5m. The reliability increases as you that each port of the CAT S60 is covered by a flap which is not quick to open.CAT S60 Underwater performance. (Image: News18.com/ Sarthak Dogra)
CAT S60 is the first smartphone in the world to house a thermal imaging camera. There are different modes to the camera as it reads heat signatures depending upon the ones you want. One of them even finds out the exact temperature of a specific point under the camera lens. As per our experimentation, the camera is mostly accurate to within 2-5 degrees.
NOTE: No, it cannot help you see through walls. In fact, none of the Thermal Imaging Sensors do that.
Other features of the phone include a dedicates SOS button on the left that lets you send your location to a pre-entered number. Also, pre-installed apps like Hike (a complete navigation app with Barometer, Longitude, Latitude and more), Keep, MaxxAudio and Speaker Dry ensure a smooth and operationally handy functioning of the phone.CAT S60 SOS Button. What’s not so cool?
Apart from the Thermal Imaging, the normal camera of the CAT S60 come with a 13-megapixel lens at the rear and 5-megapixel at the front. The image and video quality of these cameras are decent but not up to the mark of the market standards, especially with all the smartphone companies stepping up their camera game with dual cameras and what not.
The Thermal Imaging Camera of the CAT S60, though sounds cool, would not be much useful until and unless your profession demands knowing the temperature differences between things around you. As per my knowledge, this will be limited to construction or field work.CAT S60 Thermal Imaging. (Image: News18.com/ Sarthak Dogra)
Another naive feature that we really missed in the phone was a fingerprint sensor. Though it might not suit the rugged nature of the CAT S60, it surely is handy when the phone is in constant use.
The CAT S60 is priced at Rs 64,999 in the market, more than most of the iPhones available today. Even then, the smartphone might not be an ideal buy for an average smartphone user.
The thing to understand here is that CAT has designed this smartphone specifically for a niche market and has left no stone unturned to make it their best companion on and off work. So if your profession demands staying on the field most of your day, some sophisticated equipment to map your progress and a smartphone that can take a rough beating while delivering an Android experience, CAT S60 is the smartphone for you.
