The Instagram Lite is getting an update that will bring Reels short video content within the app. The company claims that India is the first country where the feature to view Reels will be available to users. Instagram Lite, as the name suggests, is a toned-down version of the regular app, meant for Android devices. The Instagram Lite app began testing in India in December 2020, with the aim of providing an app that's less than 2MB in size.
As expected, with the latest update, Instagram Lite users in India will be able to view Reels under the Reels tab. The Facebook-owned company, in a statement, said that this feature was expedited for India because "of the traction Reels is seeing in India and the early adoption of the new Instagram Lite app." Notably, India was also among the first countries to get Reels in July 2020 - following the TikTok ban by the government in the country. Reels was introduced as a substitute to TikTok in India, offering similar short video content within the platform.
However, Instagram Lite differentiates itself in a few key ways. For one, it does not get a dark theme, and there is no way to enable dark mode on Instagram Lite. It also does not get a dedicated IGTV tab, and all uploaded video content on the platform will be playable as standard videos. Like the older interface of the main Instagram app, Instagram Lite has the explore button in the bottom menu and does not use a dynamic grid. The company may expand Reel on the Lite version of the app for markets in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Facebook has announced that the company is bringing new tools for Instagram and Facebook to tackle content that exploit children. The company is also updating its guidelines more clarify to what constitutes offensive.
