Microsoft gets rid of ActiveX in Edge browser for Windows 10

ActiveX is a binary extension model launched in 1996 that gave developers the ability to include native Windows technologies into web pages.

New Delhi: Microsoft is getting rid of all things old this summer when it rolls out its latest Windows 10 operating system. The seemingly last OS to come from the tech giant will have a brand new Edge browser that will neither have the old looks nor the old technologies.

The new browser, which will replace the drab and old Internet Explorer will not have ActiveX-the two decades old binary extension model launched in 1996 that gave developers the ability to include native Windows technologies into web pages.

Microsoft listed all the old technologies and APIs that will not be supported by Edge browser under the title ActiveX. Some of the plugins that use ActiveX are Flash Player and Acrobat Reader of Adobe, Java of Oracle, and Silverlight of Microsoft, Tech Times reports.

The Edge team explained that ActiveX controls are no longer required due to the capabilities of the HTML5 language.

Other technologies and APIs that Edge will no longer support include Browser Helper Objects, Document modes, Vector Markup Language, and VBScript.

Developers of the new browser, which has been built out of Internet Explorer’s core parts, note that 220,000 lines of old code and over 300 interfaces that were exclusive to the old browser have been removed in the migration to Edge and over 4,200 fixes have been added that will allow the newest browser to operate at par with rival browsers.

Although Edge will be the default browser for Windows 10, the company has decided to continue to keep Internet Explorer around for enterprises that are dependent on the browser’s features.
