Nokia, Xiaomi Sign Patent Deal, Business Collaboration Agreement

Nokia is poised to provide network infrastructure equipment to Xiaomi under the business cooperation agreement.

Nokia and Chinese Smartphone maker Xiaomi have recently signed a multi-year patent and a business collaboration agreement. In this transaction, Xiaomi has also acquired patent assets from Nokia as both the companies agreed upon a cross license to each other’s cellular standard-essential patents. "Xiaomi is one of the world's leading smartphone manufacturers and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with them," said the President & CEO of Nokia - Rajeev Suri. "In addition to welcoming such a prominent global technology company to our family of patent licensees, we look forward to working together on a wide range of strategic projects."

Nokia is poised to provide network infrastructure equipment to Xiaomi under the business cooperation agreement. The equipment will aim to deliver high capacity, low power requirements which is expected by large web providers and data center operators. Interestingly, Nokia and Xiaomi have also agreed to further explore opportunities for cooperation in the areas of Augmented and Virtual Reality, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. For now, both the companies will collaboratively work on IP Routing based on Nokia's newly announced FP4 network processor, optical transport solutions for data center interconnect and a data center fabric solution.
