Microsoft and Sony have been on the battlefield for a while now competing for the title of the best gaming console. In fact, even Nintendo has started catching up with the portable Switch console. Now it seems there is going to be a new entrant.

Slightly Mad Studios, the name behind games like Project Cars 2 and Need for Speed: Shift, is working on its own stand-alone gaming console. Company CEO Ian Bell revealed the development via Twitter on Wednesday saying “The Mad Box is coming”.

According to a report by Variety, the console is expected to ship in around three years time, and would be competing against the Xbox and PlayStation along with support for VR (virtual reality).

“It will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming and the specs will be equivalent to a ‘very fast PC 2 years from now. We’re in early talks with manufacturers of components so we can’t say much more right now other than we have the designs specced out in detail,” said Bell in an email. The gaming console will make use of Slightly Mad's cross-platform development engine called the Madness Engine. The best part is that they are not planning to have any exclusive titles. It is also expected to have 'competitive price tag when compared to upcoming consoles. Bell has also mentioned that the console will support 4K resolution and up to 120fps when used in the VR mode.

“It will be a worldwide console and we’re already in early talks with areas that are, let’s say, not particularly open to other vendors at this moment. We have multiple investors already offering the required funding for us to see the product to completion, but it’s still early days and we’re looking at the best offers right now. All that we have approached are discussing standard partial ownership investment deals,” added Bell. While it sounds like a promising project, we think that you shouldn’t have high expectations yet as the project is still in its early stages.
