Top 5 Smartphone Brands in China: Apple No. 4; Oppo R9 Most Popular Handset

The Oppo R9 had beaten Apple iPhone 6S to take a lead of 4 percent. The Huawei Honor Joy 5S, Oppo A33 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 were the third, fourth and fifth best-sellers in China in 2016.

While the Indian smartphone market has been dominated by the likes of Samsung, Lenovo (with Moto) among others, Oppo took the lead over Huawei in Q4 2016 in China, according to a report by Counterpoint research. Apple ranked number four in China after beating Xiaomi in the same period.

Chinese player Vivo looked confident at the number 3 spot while telecom giant Huawei still continues to hold a solid market share despite being number 2 in Q4.

Samsung had no handsets in the top 10 best-sellers in China while Oppo, Huawei, Vivo and Apple had two models each respectively in the same list. LeEco Le 2 took the sixth spot.

“This is the first time since 2012, iPhone is not the best-selling smartphone in China, surpassed by OPPO R9 in 2016,” noted Neil Shah, Research Director of Counterpoint Research.

According to the report, the demand for smartphones in China remained healthy during Q4 2016 (Oct-Dec) as the smartphone shipments were up 12 percent annually and 9 percent sequentially driving the full year growth and record volumes.
