New Delhi: Pakistani media reported on Wednesday that the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down an unmanned Iranian drone over the country’s Balochistan province. The incident reportedly took place near Parom in Balochistan’s Panjgur district, which shares a border with Iran. While media reports claim security forces seized the wreckage on Monday, there has been no official statement on when the incident took place.

Dawn, a leading Pakistani daily, reported that the aircraft was shot down by a JF-17 Thunder fighter jet of the PAF “deep inside Pakistani airspace”. Pakistan Defence, a military analysis group, reported, “Air Force JF-17 Thunder fighter intercepted an armed Government of Iran drone 49km inside Pakistan & shot it down for showing hostile intent.”

Citing sources, the Dawn report said security has been tightened in Panjgur district following the incident. The PAF has issued no statement so far.

In May, Iran had warned Islamabad that they would strike terrorist safe havens in Pakistan if terror attacks did not stop.

Responding to a terrorist attack which killed at least eight Iranian border guards, Major General Mohammad Baqeri, the head of the Iranian armed forces, had said, “We cannot accept the continuation of this situation. We expect the Pakistani officials to control the borders, arrest the terrorists and shut down their bases. If the terrorist attacks continue, we will hit their safe havens and cells, wherever they are.”
