Orchid occupies the same place in the plant kingdom as tigers do in the world of animals. India has more than 1200 species of orchids spread across the Himalayan region and the Western Ghats. The North-easter state of Arunachal is one of the biggest hotspots. In the west, the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand has around 250 species of this beautiful flower which is a great indicator of the ecological health of the region in and around it. In the recent past, the Forest Department of Uttarakhand has immensely protected these flowers and promoted their conservation. It is found in the Gori valley of Pithoragarh district and Mandal forest of Gopeshwar. Though most of the species of orchids bloom between April and August, some of them can be seen during winters as well. Here are some incredibly beautiful pictures of orchids shot by Bhupesh Chandra Koetila, who works with the research wing of Uttarakhand forest department.Pecteilis Gigantea.
