Pictures: Major fire near Calcutta University campus, many dead

A major fire broke out at 3:50 am on Wednesday morning in Surya Sen market in Sealdah.

rescue workers were trying to evacuate people feared trapped inside the market.

Around 20 fire engines were rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and state Fire Services Minister Javed Khan has blamed the Left for the incident and said that the building in which the fire broke out came up during their tenure.

Wset Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the State government will give Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those who died. Those injured will be given Rs 50,000.

Rescue operations at the Surya Sen market come to a standstill because of Mamata Banerjee's visit.

Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy said, Minister for disaster management, the Mayor and the Chief Minister have reached the spot. Once we get report we will see."
