Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman had quite an interesting start to their years of knowing each other. Dutt discovered Rehman and brought her to Mumbai and in fact went on to cast her as a vamp in his film 'CID'. After the success of the film, Dutt cast her in 'Pyaasa'. It hardly came as a surprise to anyone when the film-maker cast his favourite leading lady in 'Kaagaz ke Phool' that told the story of a successful director whose career declines after he falls for his leading lady. Everyone knew of Dutt's absolute fondness for Rehman, but his married status is said to have come in the way. Later heartbroken, Dutt died a lonely death.
Raj Kapoor and his long-term romantic interest and muse Nargis worked together in 12 films including six of his own productions. The couple starred in several films together, including 'Awaara' and 'Shree 420'. Such was their off-screen chemistry that the two have been said to be one of the first on-screen couples to have brought an openness to romance in cinema. Such was their love story that it is said that some of their most casual poses together became classic images in Indian cinema.
Asha Parekh who still remains unmarried was often speculated to be having a relationship with her much-married director Nasir Hussain. After doing several roles as a child actor, at the age of 16 when Parekh returned to Bollywood, Nasir Hussain cast her in 'Dil Deke Dekho' that went on to become a great hit. This was just the beginning of her association with Hussain. She was Hussain's heroine for six more of his films including 'Teesri Manzil' and 'Caravan'. Parekh later accepted that she had a long-time boyfriend but declined to let out the details of her relationship.
Parveen Babi is said to have been in a very volatile relationship while living in with director Mahesh Bhatt. In fact, the two had a two-year affair that ended when the actor was diagnosed with a mental illness. As a token of their love, Bhatt went on to make his film 'Arth' in 1982, where the character played by Smita Patil was based on Parveen. In fact even after her death, Bhatt paid her another tribute by basing his next film 'Woh Lamhe' on her.
Best known for her absolutely brilliant performance in 'Damini', this plum role was also given to her by film-maker Rajkumar Santoshi. It is said that Santoshi is the person who actually honed Meenakshi's real talent in films like 'Ghayal'. Santoshi was said to be very keen on getting married to Meenakshi but she was not interested.
Since meeting on their first film together, 'Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage', both Amisha and Vikram started dating. While their relationship prompted several speculations on their much-awaited wedding (the couple were also living in together), they disappointed many after they went their separate ways in 2008 after a five-year old relationship.
Urmila remianed RGV's favourite muse for several years. Since the days the two did the much-successful film 'Rangeela' together, there were rumours that the actor and the film-maker were involved in a romantic relationship. The two went on to to do several films together including 'Satya', 'Kaun', 'Mast', 'Jungle', 'Bhoot' and more. However, along the way, new kid on the block, Antara Mali replaced Urmila to take up the tag of being Ramu's inspiration. Urmila, however, has always denied having had any romantic liaison with Ramu.
Rumours were abound that Subhash Ghai was more than just a mentor to Mahima Chaudhary after she made a debut in his 1997 film 'Pardes' opposite Shah Rukh Khan. However, her dream debut didn't take her far after Ghai dragged her to court trying to put a restraining order on her from flying abroad to perform at a show. In fact, Mahima in an interview also accused the film-maker of being ''too possessive''.
