2G was launched first in 1991 under the GSM standard in Finland. It was 2G that led to the massive adoption of cellphones across the world.
3G then came 10 years later in 2001. First launched by NTT Docomo, 3G was the network that gave people access to mobile internet and made smartphones practical.
