With the results pf the US Presidential elections 2020 expected on Tuesday, Americans are gearing up for the possibility of a delayed result this time. This is due to mail-in voting that has been opted by many due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

In a first, out of the 90 million votes cast till the weekend, over 55 million were mail-in votes. The of mail-in process was opted for in order to reduce personal contact and maintain social distancing in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Mail-in votes are like postal ballots. Once the voter posts a ballot, the physical process of opening envelopes, sorting them based on the areas, and preparing the physical ballots for counting is carried out.In case of discrepancies like missing signatures or incorrect information, there may be an option to reach out to the voter for rectification.

The rules for the last date of counting mail-in votes is different for all the states in US. For example, Pennsylvania will count ballots that come in till 6th November, that is till three days after the voting day of 3rd November but Florida will stop accepting mail-in votes on 3rd November itself. These differences are also likely to create some amount of confusion.

Meanwhile, early voting is also closing in most states. Example – Texas closed early voting on Friday, 31st October. Meanwhile, District of Columbia closes early voting only on 2nd November. Long queues were seen for early voting. Many analysts say, early voters are Democrats and the Republicans will cast their ballot on the day of the polling that is 3rd November.
