Need for clean governance: India Inc

Apr 08, 2011 09:51 PM IST Business Business

New Delhi: India Inc came out in support of Anna Hazare on Friday - they say corruption is a menace that needs to be tackled. But most of them shied away from taking clear sides although some agree that paying bribe is part of doing business in India. Days into Anna's protest against corruption, corporate India has emerged in his support. Engulfed as it has been with the 2G scam, India Inc says it's all for the cause. “It’s a step in the right direction. Some would say that this is a form of blackmailing the government but it is justified,” said Rahul Bajaj. “There is corruption, we all know about it. Its great that someone has stood up to the cause - this is the first step towards tackling the problem,’ said Sunil Munjal. Baby steps - but captains of industry admit that bribes are a part of how business is conducted and that Indian Inc is no different. “No corporate can put his hand on his heart and say that they have never paid bribe to get their work done at some point in time or the other,” said Mazumdar Shaw. It's this compulsion to bribe - business leaders say - they're most upset about. The government they say has to tackle the issue. “There needs to be a fight against corruption and a legislature must be passed against it,” said Adi Godrej. “There is need for clean governance. Both the government and the civil society are heading towards it,” said Uday Kotak. Corporate India is making all the right noises but there are no commitments just yet as to how it will help remove corruption.
