New Delhi: On October 20, it will be exactly 50 years since India's 1962 conflict with China. Even as the battle took its toll on the Indian Army, many of its men went down in a blaze of glory. In a special series 'Lest We Forget', CNN-IBN brings the story of Param Vir Chakra recipient Major Shaitan Singh.
Major Shaitan Singh led an infantry company against overwhelming Chinese forces at Rezang La in Ladakh. He died of multiple bullet wounds, fighting till his last breath, even ordering his men not to risk their lives in evacuating him.
Major Shaitan Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest gallantry medal. Brigadier (Retd) R Jatar was a Major with the 13th Kumaon regiment in 1962, and fought at Maggar Hill near Rezang La in Ladakh.
Lt General (Retd) Ravi Eipe was then a Captain. His Rajput Regiment took on the Chinese at Namka Chu in Arunachal Pradesh.
