Guwahati: Assam is relatively calm with no fresh reports of violence but with thousands remaining in relief camps. They say they wont go back home until they get police protection. 
 
Sections of Adivasis and Bodos, two ends of the political spectrum fled from their villages to take shelter in these camps. Their fears were identical. 
 
"If we do not get protection we will die. We are not ready to go back," said an Adivasi oldish woman staying in the camp. Another woman from the Bodo camp crying said that they needed police protection urgently or they would be burnt to death. 
 
This is a fifty year old battle for a separate identity of the Bodo community which turned specially bloody in the last 3 decades. It is an old battle under the 6th schedule of Indian constitution. A Bodo territorial area district was formed which covered 35 per cent of Assam and gave Bodos 75 per cent reservation. 
 
But the rights of the Adivasis and minorities who form a substantial chunk of population in BTAD were not secured and that led to the present conflict. Adivasis have been contesting the claim and have found themselves at the receiving end of violence by Bodo militant groups. 
 
The All Bodo Students Union has accused the Bodoland People's Front which is the ruling party of Bodo Territorial Council, of having links with the Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland. The NDFB(S) have also been accused of the mass killing of tribals in Assam. 
 
The Bodoland People's Front though, has dismissed the allegations of the link. 
 
Birsa Liberation Force, Commander in Chief Bir Singh Munda said that there could not be a society anywhere in India where only one community should survive. But experts say internal politics of various Bodo groups has often lead to such barbaric acts even in the past.
