Bolangir: Asia registers the largest number of new AIDS cases in the world and the bias against victims is so strong that an HIV positive man in Orissa killed his wife, fearing she would be ostracised after his death. Sambhu Sahoo confessed before the police that he took his wife Dipanjali to the forest, gave her sleeping pills, strangled her neck and then slit her wrist. He then tried to kill himself but could not gather enough courage. "I can not believe that he has killed his wife whom he loved so much. Perhaps he did this not to allow his wife to be ostracise after his death,” Dipanjali’s mother Radhika Sahu says. Reportedly, Sambhu’s had wanted to keep his HIV status private. He had applied for Orissa Government’s Rs 200-per-month pension for HIV patients but the officials slipped up and disclosed his name. "We have now issued a circular to all the concerned authorities not to publicly declare the name of the HIV positive patients for the sake of the pension,” Chief District Medical Officer, Bolangir, Annanta Charan Naik said. Already living with the trauma of being HIV positive, Sambhu probably could not tolerate that he will be ostracised or his wife ill-treated after his death. It could not be confirmed whether Dipanjali was HIV positive or not.
