Gandhinagar: A chargesheet has been filed against self-styled godman Asaram in a sexual assault case on Thursday. Asaram was booked for allegedly raping one of the two Surat-based sisters who stayed at his ashram in Gujarat between 1997 and 2006. He was booked under IPC sections 376, 342 and 120 (b).

In the chargesheet filed against Asaram, he has been accused of rape, illegal confinement and criminal conspiracy. Five others, including his wife and daughter have also been booked by the police.

This is the second case of sexual assault against Asaram, who is lodged in a jail in Rajasthan since August 2013. He was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at his ashram in Jodhpur. Later, two Surat-based sisters who stayed at his ashram in Gujarat accused him and his son, Narayan Sai, of rape.

The police had earlier booked Asaram's son Narayan Sai on charges of rape, sexual assault, illegal confinement and other offences on the complaint lodged by the sisters.

While the younger sister had accused Sai of repeated raping her between 2002 and 2005 when she was living in Surat ashram, the elder one accused Asaram of sexual assaults between 1997 and 2006 when she had been living in his ashram.

Asaram (75) was arrested in August on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl at his Jodhpur ashram in Rajasthan and was lodged in jail there.

The complaint against Sai was registered at Jehangirpura police station in Surat, while the one against Asaram was transferred to Ahmedabad as the alleged incident happened there.

Meanwhile, Asaram's advocates have filed for a copy of the chargesheet and the next hearing is on January 13.
