Chennai:More than 25 lakh people in Tamil Nadu will switch off their lights at 8 pm on Friday to promote energy conservation. The time is important: lights will be off for exactly eight minutes on 8-08-2008.
After the fairly successful Batti Bandh in Mumbai in December 2007, the lights out campaign has now reached Chennai. At exactly 8 pm on August 8, 2008, Chennai will switch off all lights for eight minutes .
This 88888 is a state-wide initiative by the ExNoRa International and is being supported by companies like TCS, HCL and Infosys.
“We want to drive home awareness about global warming. Eight-five per cent of the people haven't even heard of the word. So we say switch off lights. We are expecting close to 25 lakh people across Tamil Nadu to participate in this campaign," says Founder ExNoRa International M B Nirmal.
Along with this massive campaign, many awareness projects including school children have been carried out across the state. The organisers feel that with the existing power shortage this 8-minute lights out campaign is just the prefect way to create awareness among people.
“They need to be prepared for a bigger problem. The one-hour power crisis is a very small thing. This is just a symbolic way of creating awareness amongst students because they can make a difference by using less resources at home," says 88888 Projet Coordinator Preetham Alex.
