New Delhi: A drive to check the growing menace on the Delhi streets turned fatal on Sunday morning when one of the motorcyclists was killed and another injured allegedly in a firing by the Delhi Police at Parliament Street. The Delhi Police claims that tragedy happened when they tried to fire to puncture tyres of the bike to stop them.

"The police fired at the motorcyclists to subdue them. It was during one such firing that one of the pillion riders got shot. He was taken to the hospital immediately where he was declared dead ," said Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat.

Police say there was an altercation with the motorcyclists when they tried to stop them and added that the motorcyclists even vandalised the PCR van as well. It was only then that the police fired two rounds - one in the air and the other aimed at the tyre, which hit the deceased, police said.

The biker's mother says she had no idea that Karn was not at home until the police informed her. But, she condemned the police action. "I'am very sad. He made a mistake. He would leave the house without informing anyone. He would lock his room and go out without telling us," she said.

Stunt biking has been a bane for New Delhi district for quiet some time now. Over 1000 people have been challaned since 5th July. Delhi Police has even held talks with community elders to check menace of the stunt bikers.

While police action against them is a welcome step, the question that is being raised is - Was the firing necessary and what exactly was the situation that provoked firing from the PCR van?
