New Delhi: A team of police investigators will arrive in Rajasthan on Thursday with Bitti Mahanti. He was sent to 10-day police custody on Monday. Bitti had jumped parole in 2006 while serving a seven-year sentence in Alwar in Rajasthan on charges of raping a German tourist.

The police will also investigate how Bitti managed to get certificates and documents in the fake identity of 'Raghav Rajan' from Andhra Pradesh. His fingerprints will be matched with those on record for the German tourist's case.

While talking to CNN-IBN, the police officer Hemendra Sharma who had arrested Bitti in 2006 said that the man Kerala Police arrested is Bitti Mahanti.

"The Kerala Police have evidence that this man used forged documents to study and work under a false identity. I have no doubt that the man they have arrested is the same man I arrested seven years ago," Hemendra said.

"It is a relief. We were criticised for letting him go and we tried hard to catch him, going to Cuttack and other places in Odisha, but we failed. It is a relief that after so long an absconding criminal who was our responsibility has been finally caught," Hemendra further said.

Son of former Odisha DGP BB Mohanty, Bitti, was arrested by the police in Kerala while he was working in the State Bank of Travancore. An anonymous letter received by the state-run bank warned that he was in fact a rapist on the run. Bank officials shared the note with the Kerala Police. The police say that in the 6 years that he was underground, Bitti completed an MBA, taught at a college, and then got a bank job.
