BJP govt in MP rewrite textbooks to suit agenda

Jul 31, 2007 10:57 AM IST India India

Bhopal: You need a BJP government to cut down emperors to size, Muslim emperors that is. The Medieval History section of class nine Social Science textbook in the state devotes almost the same space to Mughal emperor Akbar as to Rani Durgavati, the valiant Chandel ruler who was killed resisting him. Even rulers Maharana Pratap and Shivaji get more mention in these textbooks. “The Mughals were invaders and we are trying to tell the real history so that students feel proud. Shivaji's efforts have to be told,” member of the Textbook Standing Committee, Bhagirat Kumravat said. The focus in the Social Science textbook is mainly on Hindu religious beliefs, which is reason enough for the Opposition Congress to cry foul. “The BJP is anti-minorities and wants to remove them from History books. They want to teach their history in MP,” Opposition leader in Madhya Pradesh, Jamuna Devi said. In fact, the class eighth textbook mentions first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru just in passing. There is a one-line reference to him in eight pages on the national movement. After all deleting one line is easier when rewriting the entire history is on the agenda.
