New Delhi: Sudhusudan and Santosh Wadhwa were locked up by the MCD inside their Tilak Nagar house in West Delhi on Tuesday.
The Wadhwas were taking their afternoon nap when MCD officials locked them up and sealed their house from the outside. The couple were stranded inside for over six hours, until their son found out about the incident and called the police.
Their son, Anil Wadhwa says, "They are an elderly couple and both of them are heart patients. They had to go through all this because of the apathy of the MCD officials."
Though the police and fire brigade arrived at the scene when called, they refused to break the seal until the Mayor intervened.
Neighbours say that the MCD team which sealed the Wadhwas' house did so without cross-checking whether anyone was living in the house. All the team did to inquire was a cursory glance through these ventilators before applying the seals.
The MCD admits a mistake was made, but says the Wadhwas were breaking the law by using a residential property as a godown.
However, Delhi's Mayor, Aarti Mehra was apologetic and said, "It's a mistake and we are looking at the matter."
The incident is said to have left the elderly couple shaken. It's not clear yet whether the MCD will take any action against the negligent officials.
