New Delhi: The Delhi Police have been cracking down on landlords who have failed to get their tenants verified and now they are both headed to police stations together. 
 
The police has already arrested 39 landlords in the Capital and this has got people queuing up outside police stations to get their tenants verified just days ahead of the Republic Day. 
 
Take for example Bhagwat Prasad Munde, an advocate, for whom persuasion failed. However, when five cases were registered at his local police station on Tuesday, not just Munde, but almost 500 others filed their tenants' verification forms with an East Delhi Police station. 
 
Now, on hindsight, Munde argues that this is for the right reasons. "We should always give information to the police," says he. 
 
 
So, if the intention is noble, then what is taking people so long? 
 
A Delhi landlord, Davider Singh Rathore, tries to justify his lateness by saying, "It's been a long time since I got my tenant verified, so I thought I would do it today." 
 
The police admits the media's played a role in this mad rush. 
 
Says ACP (East), Delhi Police, P Karunakaran, "From the beginning of this year, there has been no voluntary response from the public. Our beat staff regularly visits colonies and now, since the media has taken up the case, the response has been tremendous. Because of the media, the public awareness has increased and people are feeling threatened." 
 
And he's got it right for landlords say that they came to the police station only after they saw many of their brethren getting the police treatment on television on Tuesday night. 
 
And it's not just landlords alone, the police has been surprisingly regular with its checks at cyber cafes in crowded neighbourhoods, checking their records. 
 
In a drive that finds few takers for the rest of the year, this new enthusiasm is probably going to last till Republic day.
