SC slams govt for not controlling prices of essential drugs

Oct 11, 2012 01:49 PM IST India India

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday slammed the government for being 'non-committal' on including essential drugs within the ambit of its price control measures. According to the apex court, the government has not taken any steps in checking the pricing of drugs in the country.

Earlier, the court had asked the government not to alter the existing pricing system for essential medicines. Rebuking the government, the Supreme Court said that the drugs prescribed by doctors are beyond the means of common man.

The apex court also said that the courts are extremely slow to interfere with policy matters but if for 17 years nothing happens where will the people go. The government is likely to give an explanation to the Supreme Court on Thursday. Later in the day, the government will tell the Supreme Court by what time frame it will implement the new drug policy.
