Chandigarh: After their dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls, the Shiromani Akali Dal-led government in Punjab has initiated a crackdown on the drug trade in the state. More than 1,000 cases have been registered in Punjab in the last 10 days alone. 
 
Known for being a hub for the drug trade, a massive raid was conducted in the Dulewal village in the Moga district of Punjab to nab drug dealers on Wednesday. In one of the biggest raids with over 2,500 policemen, more than 200 cases were registered overnight. 
 
"We have registered about 182 cases of NDPS and arrested 191 people. We have seized huge quantity of drugs," Inspector General of Police Paramraj Singh Umranangal said. 
 
In 2014, the Punjab Police busted a Rs 6,000 crore drug racket headed by a man named Jagdish Bhola. Bhola had named Bikram Majithia, brother-in-law of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, of being involved in the racket. 
 
The second name that cropped up was Damanvir Singh, son of former Punjab Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur. Despite calls by the opposition Congress, no action was taken against Phillaur. However, after the dismal performance of the Akalis in the Lok Sabha polls, Phillaur put in his resignation to salvage the party's image. 
 
"Our name was cropping up again and again and damaging the party image," former Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said. 
 
Since May 16 more than 1,000 drug related cases have been registered in Punjab. 400 cases have been registered against villagers living along the Indo-Pakistan border while 3 police officers have been dismissed for links with drug traders. But, with no big names included in the list of the ones arrested, the opposition has called the government's actions an eyewash. 
 
"If it's a serious effort, I'm very happy. But this is not an exercise which is there to finish it off, it's an exercise for public relations," Congress MP from Amritsar Amarinder Singh. 
 
The state government has always blamed the Centre for not ensuring a fool proof border. But with allies BJP in power and an angry electorate in the state, the Akalis perhaps have no option but to clean up the system. But will they be able to succeed is the big question.
