7 wonders list is insulting: Egypt

Giza: The pyramids of Giza are among the finalists for a new list of Seven Wonders of the World. In an online contest people vote for the new seven wonders but it seems Egyptians have a problem with it. Egypt's director of supreme antiquities, Zahi Hawass, finds it insulting to be included in a list with modern marvels such as the Statue of Liberty. “No, the pyramids have to be away from this list completely. The pyramids still exist until today as the symbol of the genius of the ancient people and we should not put them in any modern list,” Hawass says. This is the reason Egyptian authorities even refused to meet with the contest organisers who were greeted with fanfare virtually in every other country. The pyramids of Egypt leave little doubt that they are a wonder of the world and according to tourists the pyramids are in a league of their own. “The Egyptians are well heritage snobs,” a tourist says. With relative infants in the name of wonders of the world, Hawass concludes by saying, “You don't do it, that’s fine. No sites can compete with the pyramids.”
