With less than 4 months to go for the Lok Sabha elections..the Modi government is going all out to woo disenchanted farmers as well as counter Congress' loan waiver politics. The government will launch universal basic income for farmers...with the idea being that subsidy or crop loan waiver to farmers will soon be phased out. Having lost three crucial state elections to Congress in December, the BJP is in a rush to appease farmers. The party believes the scheme's impact must be felt by farmers well before the general elections in order to deliver the political dividend it is seeking. But is it too late?
