FIR against VS politically motivated: Karat

New Delhi: CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat came out strongly against the proposed FIR against former Kerala chief minister VS Achuthanandan saying that the case was politically motivated.

"This is a politically motivated case. Achuthanandan has been in the forefront of the campaign against the corruption in the previous UDF regime, which is why this is happening," he said.

"We will fight this case legally and politically," he added.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) had announced earlier in the day that it would file an FIR against Achuthanandan under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The FIR would be submitted to the Calicut Vigilance Court. It will be filed under Section 13(1)(D) of Prevention of Corruption Act and under Section 120 of the Indian Penal Code (Criminal conspiracy) and 201 (Disappearance of evidence).

The VACB, in a report, said that Achuthanandan had allotted government land to his relatives in Kasargod in violation of government norms.

The former CM, however, called it a political vendetta by the ruling government.
