<table width="70" border="0" align="right" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tr> <td class="pLeft2"><a href="#"><img src="/pix/sitepix/gr_video.gif" width="70" height="14" border="0" /></a></td> </tr> </table>New Delhi: A decommissioned French aircraft carrier, Clemenceau, is on its way to India to get scrapped in shipbreaking yards in India. 
 
The 48-year-old ship was not allowed entry by Greece and Turkey because it is made of deadly toxic chemicals, especially asbestos, which causes cancer. The ship is presently anchored in Toulon, France. 
 
Environmental activists all over India have been staging protests to prevent the ship from setting sail. 
 
"Supreme Court has directed that this ship must be decontaminated before it is allowed to enter India," activist Madhumita Dutta of pressure group Corporate Accountability Desk said. 
 
The ship has not submitted form 7, which is issued by the exporting country that lists an inventory of the toxic material in the ship. 
 
Ironically the French government has banned the import of asbestos since 1996. 
 
The French government wants to dump the aircraft carrier in Alang, which is on the Gujarat coast where end-of-life ships are recycled for steel. 
 
Roughly 10 per cent of India's steel comes from this place, which is one of the world's largest ship breaking yards. 
 
"Supreme Court has found out that workers in this yard are not trained in shipbreaking," Dutta said. 
 
The labourers who work in this yard hail from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa and are completely unaware of the toxic and hazardous wastes. 
 
Activists have been protesting against foreign ships that are transported, some of them illegally to shipping yards in India and Bangladesh where the ships are scrapped, primarily for steel. 
 
The Supreme Court Monitoring Committee on hazardous wastes has regularly expressed its concern about toxic pollution at Alang. 
 
But the Indian Government is yet to strictly enforce provisions of the Basel Convention, which require ship owners to detoxify ships before they are sent for breaking. 
 
However, the Ministry of Environment and Forests is wary of closing down the ship breaking yards in Alang because the Government does not want to lose out on revenue from cheap recycled steel.
