New Delhi: Kannada actress Maria Susairaj has almost gotten away in the Neeraj Grover murder case. Despite the nature of the case and the manner in which Neeraj's body was hacked to pieces, Maria will walk free. 
 
A session court in Mumbai has sentenced her to just three years on the count that she destroyed evidence. 
 
"Lapses do happen in life. Be it a lapse on the part of the crime branch or the prosecution, but there has been a lapse. There were many witnesses and documents. In case the judge has missed out on some vital portion, I will not be able to comment," said Neeraj's father Amarnath Grover. 
 
Maria Susairaj will be walking free and her fiance Emile Jerome too will be a free man in a few years, despite killing TV executive Neeraj Grover and chopping his body into 300 pieces before dumping it in a jungle. 
 
Even as the Mumbai Sessions Court announced the quantum of sentence on Friday, eminent crime lawyers across the country said the prosecution should have made a stronger case. 
 
"It's a failure from the part of prosecution. Otherwise it would have been an open and shut case, and Section 302 would have been made out. Unfortunately, there are loose ends, which have been left," said criminal lawyer Ashish Bhagat. 
 
"For considerable time attempts were made to procure knife, bags etc, then his body was mercilessly, inhumanly cut into pieces and then attempts were made to destroy the body. Well, this is unfortunately, in my humble view, not a case where the accused could be entitles - in the facts and circumstances of the case - to receive this kind of benefit," said criminal lawyer Majid Memon. 
 
Senior lawyers also say that it's important to take a re-look at the entire legal and judicial system. 
 
"Need for better technology to record the statement of the accused on a tamper proof tape and then it should also be made admissible in the court of law…currently it's not…if tat happens like in foreign countries then the number of convictions would go much higher," said senior lawyer KTS Tulsi. 
 
Many argue that a weak prosecution in this case led to a rather soft punishment for the two accused in one of the most gruesome murder cases in recent times. The only consolation for the Grovers is that the doors of the High Court remain open for them.
