Woman from Haryana becomes mother at 51

Sep 22, 2010 10:32 AM IST India India

New Delhi: A woman from Haryana has become a mother at 51. What’s more surprising is that she did not need an egg donor to conceive. After two failed cycles of in vitro fertilisation, Aneeta Mathur is third time lucky. Twins Anuj and Tanuj, were born nine months ago, using Aneeta's own eggs. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the womb, in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. Anita is relieved to be a mother at last and said that she is thankful that no one will call her a sterile woman now. It's pretty incredible that even by the age of 51, Anita Mathur hadn't hit menopause. Her doctors say they had no qualms about IVF in her case – the Indian Council for Medical Research says that after menopause, pregnancy is risky both for mother and child. Previously, Rajo Devi and Bhateri Devi – both of whom conceived through IVF using donor eggs at the ages 70 and 66 respectively – both are now suffering serious health complications. Dr Manika Sharma, IVF Specialist said, “They are prone to abortions, premature babies require more ante-natal care, close monitoring is required.” However, she added, “It is not that we are promoting that you get married late and have babies late and start thinking of babies at 50. What we are trying to say that women who have reached this age group because of certain circumstances and do not have baby, they do have a hope of having babies with their own eggs.”
