Mumbai: It wasn't very long ago when actress Neha Dhupia famously said that in India, only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sells. Since then Aamir and Salman's films have done much better than Shah Rukh Khan's. But looking at the opening weekend's box office numbers of 'The Dirty Picture', one can say that sex still sells.
Vidya Balan as never seen before, in a role which very few actresses would dare to do, that's Milan Luthria's latest release 'The Dirty Picture'. Also starring Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tushar Kapoor, the film produced by Ekta Kapoor ran into controversy, had an eye catching promo and a hit track.
The Dirty Picture created a strong buzz before the release. As expected it got a good opening of 60-65 per cent in multiplexes and 80-85 per cent in single screens.
Made on a budget of Rs 21 crore, the film collected about 9.5 crores on Friday, 10.7 crores on Saturday and 12.3 crores on Sunday, taking the three day weekend total to a massive 32.7 crores.
And though adult films are considered to be unfriendly to family audiences at the box office, exhibitors say it has managed to find the balance.
Shirish Hand, Senior VP (Marketing), Fun Cinemas, says, "It's true but it makes up because lot of young men and women have been coming for it. So the loss of the family audience have been made up by others, young and college students."
Coming up next is Ladies VS Ricky Bahl by the same team which delivered last year's big surprise 'Band Bajaa Baarat'.
