Faridabad: Over 200 shops were gutted in a huge fire at a cracker market in Faridabad's famous Dussehra Ground on Tuesday evening. The number of injuries and deaths is still not confirmed as the police say that five people were hurt but eyewitnesses put the figure at 20.
Around 20 cars parked nearby were also damaged in the fire.
The fire has been brought under control now. The police suspect that a short circuit could have caused the fire.
Eyewitnesses said that loud explosions could be heard for about 15 minutes at the ground as the fire engulfed the shopping stalls.
Vendors whose shops were gutted refused to leave the premises alleging that they were made to pay the safety charges for the shop licence but no fire safety measures were put in place.
One of the vendors, Ajay Batra, said that he roamed around Dussehra ground helplessly as his motorcycle was gutted and his shop too, due to which he suffered a loss of over Rs 3 lakh.
He also alleged that the first fire tender reached the spot only 30-45 minutes after the incident.
The police said that it will take at least 2-3 days to clear the area.
