Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Saturday refused to grant permission to the SIT to seek death penalty for the former state minister Maya Kodnani. Kodnani along with Bajrang Dal's Babu Bajrangi has been convicted in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case.

Kodnani was sentenced to 28 years of jail by a special court. The government had filed an appeal in the Ahmedabad high court but later decided to withdraw the appeal.

The SIT lawyer Prashant Desai said. "It is their decision. we are only lawyers. We just act according to the instructions. They have taken the opinion from the Advocate General. After the opinion they decided not to file. SIT is only an investigating agency. The SIT wanted to will file another appeal but the Advocate General refused."
