New Delhi: The appointment of the new Indian Council of Historical Research chief Professor Y Sudershan Rao has triggered a debate. Historians have expressed dissatisfaction over the decision by calling Rao an unfamiliar entity in the field of history. His appointment has raised questions whether the BJP is indulging in saffronisation of history. 
 
TK Venkatsubramanian, Former Head of the department of History in the Delhi University said, It's absurd to have a person heading a body related to history without any substantial work in the field and that's why his appointment is unacceptable. 
 
It is yet another decision by the Narendra Modi government which has invited controversy. Rao's appointment has met stiff resistance from historians as he has been a controversial figure. In a blog written in 2007 on the caste system, Rao had said that the caste system has been misinterpreted as an exploitative social system and that it actually worked well in ancient times. 
 
He also argued that questionable social customs in India can be traced to the period of Muslim rule in North India. Historians have also picked on what Rao said were the agendas for his chairmanship, proving the authenticity of the Mahabharata and Ramayana and establishing their dates. 
 
He also said that there was archaeological evidence to back the theory that there was once a temple where the Babri Masjid later stood. 
 
Rao himself remains defiant in the face of opposition. He said, "I stand by my views on Ramayana, Mahabharata, caste system. Views may differ and there is room for it." 
 
Those who are supporting him are calling it vendetta. Senior journalist Swapan Dasgupta said. "Why are people judging him too early. Judge him by what he does during his tenure." 
 
The question really is if Rao's elevation is due to his academic credibility or is there really an attempt, as his detractors allege, by the BJP to saffronise history.
