New Delhi: The appointment of the new Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) chief Professor Y Sudershan Rao has triggered a debate. In a blog written in 2007 on the caste system, Rao had said that the caste system has been misinterpreted as an exploitative social system and that it actually worked well in ancient times. 
 
He also argued that questionable social customs in India can be traced to the period of Muslim rule in North India. Historians have also picked on what Rao said were the agendas for his chairmanship, proving the authenticity of the Mahabharata and Ramayana and establishing their dates. 
 
He also said that there was archaeological evidence to back the theory that there was once a temple where the Babri Masjid later stood. 
 
"There is no fear of saffronisation of history as ICHR only promotes historical research and not the primary source for historical education," Rao said.
