New Delhi: An International Taekwondo trainer left his lavish lifestyle to serve the poor and the needy and is providing shelter to those with disabilities who have been abandoned by their families.

The shelter located in Delhi's Vasant Kunj area provides love and care to the mentally challenged, elderly, differently-abled, rape victims, HIV affected and those abandoned by their own. Ravi Kalra's home is open to all not accepted by others and left on the streets to die.

"My life changed when I saw a dog and a baby eating together from the stinking garbage that really turned my life and that happened in 2007," Kalra said

Meera looks like an adult, but behaves like a child. She was brought to this shelter by Kalra after her family abandoned her. "There are mental disabilities and almost everyone ignores them. But I could not take it. I thought when people do not have anything for survival, how can I live in comfort?," he said.

One of the residents of the shelter said she was left here by her brothers after her leg was fractured. Another said, "I was a street vendor in Old Delhi. I met with an accident and my body got damaged. After that, people dropped me here."

Kalra has so far cremated 2,584 unclaimed bodies. "Seventy four people have died in my arms. I have seen their soul going out. Till date, in span of many years, I have cremated 2584 unclaimed dead bodies," he said.

By serving the poor, homeless and the needy, Kalra epitomises the spirit of humanity. If we perform even one of the multiple tasks done by him, our purpose of existence would be served.

From the elderly to the new born, Kalra's arms are open for all. The school has ignited the light of education in the lives of over 80 unprivileged kids

The people have been living on this rented plot since past five years and now they have been asked to vacate the area. You can help them by providing an alternative shelter in Delhi/NCR.
