Assam: Kokrajhar still tense, protesters stop train

Jul 23, 2012 01:47 PM IST India India

New Delhi: The violence in the Kokrajhar region of Assam escalated on Monday with the protesters stopping the Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express. The train left for its destination after security forces cleared the track.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the violence reached 17 on Monday morning.

Police have intensified patrols after reports that the clashes between locals and immigrants was now spreading to Chirang district.

A 14-year-old boy, Zakir Ali, was stoned to death by unidentified persons in Narabari area of Kokrajhar Road, the sources said.

Four cadres of former insurgent outfit Bodo Liberation Tigers were shot dead by unidentified persons at Joypur area under Kokrajhar police station of Kokrajhar district on Saturday night, the sources said.

Four others were injured in Kodalduha area in an armed attack, they said. Curfew was clamped on the town from Saturday noon and section 144 CRPC imposed in the district.

Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to send more forces to the BTC area.

Appealing to the people to maintain peace and harmony, he alleged that the disturbances was a 'political conspiracy to defame the Bodo people'. Mohilary said any attempt to break communal harmony would be seriously dealt with.

CNN-IBN spoke to Army officials who maintained that no extra units have been deployed, but the Army is covering its area of responsibility.

Around 10 companies of central paramilitary forces have been deployed and 5-6 more companies are expected to reach the district.

Meanwhile, around 36,000 people have fled their homes and taken shelter in temporary relief camps.
