Kolkata hospital says it did not turn away woman

Kolkata: A woman died in Kolkata soon after giving birth to twins on a pavement after she was allegedly denied admission by, not one, but two government-run hospitals. The incident occurred on Thursday night.

The first infant was born outside the Chittaranjan Sevasadan nursing home in Haazra.

The 40-year-old victim then made her way to Sambhunath Pandit Hospital where she was allegedly turned away again.

It was on the way that she delivered the second baby and died soon after.

The deceased’s husband said, "We took her to the Hazra Hospital where they denied admission. Then we went to Shambhunath Hospital and we were asked to go back to Hazra Hospital. That is when she died on the way."

The medical superintendent of Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Ashis Mukhopadhyay, however claimed that all allegations against the hospital were baseless.

"All allegations are baseless. There was no patient who was turned off from this hospital. Nor any patient was referred. On the contrary, we admitted the 2 very sick children... that person is not meeting me also... I went there to meet him, he was not there."

He added, "His 27-year-old daughter, who is looking after these two children, gave in writing that whatever happened, happened at home. Nothing has happened at hospital."

"Two separate inquiries have been ordered. One is of this hospital comprising a three-member team including myself. The other is from the side of the government of west Bengal. Our hospital inquiry report finds all allegations baseless," the superintendent said.

The Opposition, meanwhile, has demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who ironically holds the health portfolio, hand over the responsibility to someone else.
