Kolkata: The West Bengal government has ordered a probe into the death of a woman who was forced to give birth on a pavement in Kolkata after being denied admission by two top hospitals, Chittaranjan Sevasadan and Shambhunath Pandit Hospital.
Usha Tanti and her husband shuffled in vain between the hospitals despite her having a health card.
Barely a day old twins have seen how the apathy of the government hospitals can change their lives.
The hospital authorities though have denied all the charges after an internal enquiry report.
Superitendent, Chittatanjan Sevasadan Ashish Mukhopadhyay said, "All charges are baseless, we have not turned down any patients, in fact the two children are admitted in our hospital."
Meanwhile the CPI-M has jumped into the fray demanding that Mamata Banerjee gives up her health portfolio which she currently holds.
