Log on to Blackle, save energy

Jun 06, 2007 01:55 AM IST India India

New Delhi: We have just eight years to save planet Earth from a climactic catastrophe, says a UN report. This alarming bit of news has sent environmentalists world over panicking into a huddle, working out ways to optimise energy conservation and combat global warming. So as conservation and awareness become the buzzwords, could Internet have stayed behind? Blackle creators have done its bit to save energy by launching Blackle – a search page that saves energy! Blackle creators claims logging on to Blackle ( will save 750 MegaWatt of energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen,” say Blackle creators. Though not scientifically proven, Blackle’s “energy efficiency” is being furiously marketed by the search giant that says the concept has value as energy savings, however small, add up. However, many skeptics have dismissed the concept in terms of user friendliness (readability of black web pages isn’t great) and the significance of the energy savings.
