Meerut: Tensions erupted at a Mahapanchayat in Meerut after supporters of arrested BJP MLA Sangeet Som clashed with police on Sunday. According to reports, police had resort to lathicharge and fire in the air after protesters pelted stones at them.
The supporters of the MLA who has been arrested for allegedly giving hate speeches that led to communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar, defied police restrictions to hold a Mahapanchayat in Meerut. The police had imposed section 144 in the area.
The area remains tense after the clash with police. The crowd had gheraod the Meerut Commissioner, District Magistrate and the SSP.
"Sangeet Som should be transferred to Meerut immediately and case against him should be withdrawn. If these demands are not met we are ready to go for a more violent protest and will die for this," Som's supporters said.
