Ahmedabad: British student Kaya Eldridge could have left India in disgust after she was allegedly molested at her flat in Ahmedabad and then “humiliated” in a court from which it had sought justice. She is staying back and fighting.

Eldridge, 23, alleges the defence lawyer asked her personal and irrelevant questions in the metropolitan magistrate's court on Monday. She was allegedly asked if she smoked and drank liquor.

“My experience in court was intensely humiliating. It was not physically painful as sexual assault, but I was just as frightened and I was just as humiliated,” Eldridge alleges.

Eldridge broke down in the court and pleaded for privacy in the trial after alleged hostile questioning by the defence lawyer. “I felt powerless and helpless--as if I did not have a voice. Nobody was listening. I felt as if I was not being respected. I felt as if I had been stripped of dignity."

Eldridge told CNN-IBN she is determined to stay in Ahmedabad till she gets justice. “I think it is very important that everyone is made aware of what has happened here (in the court). I think all too often women are too scared to come out and say what has happened to them,” she says.

“It is important to come out and say that this is unacceptable behaviour. I will stay in India till the end of the case. I don't intent to be chased out soon.”

Elridge has written to the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, requesting a judicial inquiry into the proceedings at the metropolitan court. She says that during the proceedings, the audience made fun of her and nothing was done to prevent it.

According to police complaint Elridge filed on August 23, a plumber who had come to her home had molested her.
