Mumbai: The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has come up with a new plan to decongest traffic in Mumbai. The civic body has proposed a new coastal ring road for its western suburbs and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is said to be lobbying hard at the Center for its clearance. 
 
The proposed coastal road will not only be a 4 by 4 expressway but also improve inter-connectivity, so that people from various parts of the city can take it and come in and go out. 
 
The coastal network would be 33 kilometer long stretching from Marine Drive to Malad. Like New York and Tokyo, Mumbai too will build its coastal road on reclaimed land; and the areas with mangroves would have stilt roads. 
 
The entire project is expected to cost around Rs 6000 crore to Rs 7000 crore. 
 
However the current environment policy does not allow coastal roads and environmentalists are also questioning the impact of further reclamation. 
 
"Every city comes to a point after which reclamation proves negative. I think Bombay has reached there. So I think reclaiming land to build roads is a bad idea," said Citispace Convenor Nayana Kathpalia. 
 
Transport experts are also questioning the financial feasibility of the project. The Bandra-Worli Sealink, which cost around one-fifth of this proposed project, has below par toll collections, and given Mumbai's track record of delayed implementation, the costs are expected to go way beyond those projected. 
 
Even so the project has already caught the eye of Mukesh Ambani, who expressed interest in executing it. For Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who completes one year in office next month, this is a legacy he wants to leave behind.
