Bearing the brunt of unseasonal rains, Nashik farmers sell onions at minimal prices

Farmers across the country are bearing the brunt of unseasonal rains that have destroyed their produce. The losses are staggering pushing cultivators beyond the edge of desperation. Over 25,000 hectares of onion crop in Nashik has been damaged since last October. Farmers can no longer stock the onions to sell them later and are forced to sell them in the local mandi at a much lower rate. What would have fetched them over Rs 1,000 per quintal, is being sold for less than Rs 500 per quintal.
