Hyderabad: A pregnant woman was allegedly transfused with HIV positive blood in Nellore after she underwent a caesarean operation. Angry relatives staged a day-long protest against the hospital and the Red Cross society. An inquiry has now been ordered.
"She was healthy throughout her pregnancy. Even her baby is healthy. After her delivery, the hospital said she is HIV positive. How is that possible? It is obviously because of the blood they gave. We want action against them," said a relative of the victim.
Relatives staged a day-long dharna in front of the hospital and the Red Cross office, demanding action against the alleged negligence. Red Cross officials, meanwhile, said that they will probe the incident.
Dr AV Subhramanyam, General Secretary, Red Cross society, said, "The family did take three blood units from us. We exercise all precautions while testing blood, but we will inquire into this allegation as the HIV virus also has a window period which may go undetected."
Meanwhile, the district collector has ordered an inquiry, asking district health officials to probe the incident and submit a detailed report.
