Haridwar: His was a life less noticed, till he died. Thirty four-year-old Swami Nigamanand fasted for 115 days in Haridwar to protest against illegal mining that was polluting the Ganga.
When he died on Monday he was finally noticed and ironically because he died in the same hospital where Baba Ramdev fasting against under the spotlights was recuperating.
The Matri Sadan Ashram that he was a part of is fighting a bitter battle with his family - over how his last rites should be conducted.
Father of Nigamanand Prakash Kumar Jha said, "Since I am the father, his body should be handed over to me for cremation. "
Member of Matri Sadan Ashram Kaushalanand said, "Those who are saying he should be cremated, don't know anything about the rituals."
The district administration had to finally intervene and it was agreed that Nigamanand would be buried. After allegations made by the family that he could have been poisoned, a second postmortem was also conducted on the dead sadhu.
Politicians and baba also trooped in to pay homage to Nigamanad and reap dividends.
Even as a CBI enquiry will look into allegations of him being poisoned and as bitter battles are fought and controversy rages on. The sanyasi who fought a long and lonely battle - has found no peace, even in death.
