On September 5th, 2017, Gauri Lankesh a veteran journalist and activist was shot dead outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru. Gauri ran the weekly 'Gauri Lankesh Patrike,' a Kannada tabloid that she had started in 2005. Her strong LIBERAL views often found her critical of the RSS' ideology and the BJP’s politics. In November 2016, she was found guilty of criminal defamation in a case involving Karnataka BJP MP Prahlad Joshi and had been sentenced to six months in jail. She was out on bail.
A woman who challenged patriarchy, casteism and inequality, she was also vocal in her criticism of the Lingayat community’s social practices.
On Off Centre this week we trace Gauri’s journey through the people she spent most of her day with – her colleagues and sister Kavita Lankesh.
