One of the biggest challenges for the BJP led NDA government is the agrarian distress reported from across the country. In the interim budget presented on February 1st, the government announced a new annual income support scheme – Rs.6000 would be paid in three quarterly instalments to farmers with land holding up to 2 hectares. Criticized for being too little too late and called an election gimmick, this scheme will cost the exchequer Rs.75,000 crores.
